West Cumbria Mining (WCM) is today pleased to announce that Simon Zanker has joined the team as Operations Director.
Simon joins from Hargreaves Industrial Services Ltd where he was most recently Mining Operations Director advising major stakeholders on worldwide mining opportunities.
In his new role, Simon will lead the day-to-day operations of WCM’s Woodhouse Colliery project and will be based at the Haig office in Whitehaven, Cumbria.
Commenting on his appointment Mark Kirkbride, CEO of WCM said, “This senior appointment signifies the clear intent by WCM to transition the business into the next phase of the project, being that of construction and operation readiness.”
Simon is a highly qualified and accomplished Mining Engineer, with over 36-years’ experience in mining. He commenced his career as an underground worker and following a stint of working on the coal face and in mine developments, he then rose through the ranks holding numerous senior management positions at many of the UK super-pits, before becoming the Colliery Manager at Hargreaves Maltby Mine. Having experience in some of the most arduous mining conditions, Simon has introduced new systems and implemented changes in working practices which has allowed increased efficiency and productivity from underground coal production units. During Simon’s mining career, he led the recovery of UK’s biggest landslide project and was subsequently appointed Operational Development Director for Hargreaves opencast division in England.
