West Cumbria Mining hosts visit from Cumberland Geological Society

WCM’s Project Geologist, Dennis Rowland, held a morning session with the Cumberland Geological Society recently, as part of a Society day trip introducing ‘Coal and Iron in West Cumbria.’

The aim of the session was to provide an overview of the geology and mining history of the coalfield and an update on the progress of the WCM project which is aiming to mine metallurgical coal from seams off the coast of St Bees Head.

The construction of the mine will require an extensive and varied supply chain, across a range of sectors, including construction catering, mine and office supplies, transportation and site maintenance.  We have already started to engage with local and national businesses and share with them the opportunities available.

The positive impact on the local community will begin to be felt far before the first coal is extracted. Once operational, there are clear benefits to be felt from a modern mine which will also impact positively on the local community and the wider UK economy.

Our highly experienced management team has identified a long-term demand for our specific metallurgical coal in Europe, despite the recent closures of some of the UK steel works, and believe that the proposed new mine near Whitehaven has all the attributes to be a successful mine. It is known to offer extensive deposits of high quality metallurgical coal, good transportation links, local mining experience, a wide range of local employment options and good community support.
